The Visit of the Magi
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 "A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more."
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
Side Notes:
vs. 5-6 Matthew often quoted Old Testament prophets. This prophecy, paraphrasing Micah 5:2, had been delivered seven centuries earlier.
vs. 6 Most religious leader believed in a literal fulfillment of all Old Testament prophecy; therefore, they believed the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Ironically, when Jesus was born, these same religious leaders became his greatest enemies. When the Messiah for whom they had been waiting finally came, they didn't recognize him.
vs. 8 Herod did not want to worship Christ - he was lying. This was a trick to get the Magi to return to him and reveal the whereabouts of the newborn king. Herod's plan was to kill Jesus.
vs. 11 Jesus was probably one or two years old when the Magi found him. By this time, Mary and Joseph were married, living in a house, and intending to stay in Bethlehem for a while.
vs. 11 The Magi gave these expensive gifts because they were worthy presents for a future king. Bible students have seen in the gifts symbols of Christ's identity and what he would accomplish. Gold was a gift for a king; incense, a gift for deity; myrrh, a spice for a person who was going to die. These gifts may have provided the financial resources for the trip to Egypt and back.
vs. 11 Magi brought gifts and worshiped Jesus for who he was. This is the essence of true worship - honoring Christ for who he is and being willing to give him what is valuable to you. Worship God because he is the perfect, just, and almighty Creator of the universe, worthy of the best you have to give.
vs. 12 After finding Jesus and worshiping him, the Magi were warned by God not to return through Jerusalem as they had intended. Finding Jesus may mean that your life must take a different direction, one that is responsive and obedient to God's Word. Are you willing to be lead a different way?
vs. 13 This was the second dream or vision that Joseph received from God. Joseph's first dream revealed that Mary's child would be the Messiah (1:20-21). His second dream told him how to protect the child's life. Although Joseph was not Jesus' natural father, he was Jesus' legal father and was responsible for his safety and well being. Divine guidance comes only to prepared hearts. Joseph remained receptive to God's guidance.

Hey there! Is it beginning to look a lot like Christmas where you are all at?!? Sorry I didn't write more on the last post...my internet has been acting up lately! So I'm glad I could get on today and post the second part. And Anna...I'm so glad that we are helping you out with your church challenge...that's awesome! I really like all the side notes...especially the ones where it was saying how these wise men traveled thousands of miles to find the Christ child...and how now we expect God to come looking for us...they did have it right back then...we are the ones that need to be seeking Him and bringing our gifts of worship to Him! I love the Christmas story...it just shows us how much God truly loves us! But this study had been a good reminder to me that I need to seek God out every day and find out what I need to be doing for Him and not asking Him what He is going to be doing for me! Hey Britt...do you have any interesting history stuff to add to any of this...I know that you like that kind of stuff and thought maybe you'd have something to add!
Anna...I checked your blog...I don't think you are being selfish for wanting this baby to come early! I would want to be home as well for Christmas...and I know what you mean about stillbirth...I still think of those other couples that we met at Faith's Lodge who lost their babies during delievery...but then there were the couples that lost their babies a few weeks after birth from SIDS...I guess all that to say that God has your babies days already numbered and we can't do anything to change that. I keep praying that your baby will outlive the both of you....so try not to worry...but I know that's hard not to do...I am the same way. This baby will come when he or she is ready...and it will have the perfect birthday! And I'm praying every day that you will get to bring home a happy and healthy baby (beore the 23rd!).
Hope you all have a fun snow day!
It's a boy! Hunter Robert. 6lbs 9oz, 19 inches Born at 4:22am!
Thanks for all the prayers!
