Job 37

1 "At this my heart pounds
and leaps from its place.

2 Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.

3 He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven
and sends it to the ends of the earth.

4 After that comes the sound of his roar;
he thunders with his majestic voice.
When his voice resounds,
he holds nothing back.

5 God's voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.

6 He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,'
and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour.'

7 So that all men he has made may know his work,
he stops every man from his labor.

8 The animals take cover;
they remain in their dens.

9 The tempest comes out from its chamber,
the cold from the driving winds.

10 The breath of God produces ice,
and the broad waters become frozen.

11 He loads the clouds with moisture;
he scatters his lightning through them.

12 At his direction they swirl around
over the face of the whole earth
to do whatever he commands them.

13 He brings the clouds to punish men,
or to water his earth and show his love.

14 "Listen to this, Job;
stop and consider God's wonders.

15 Do you know how God controls the clouds
and makes his lightning flash?

16 Do you know how the clouds hang poised,
those wonders of him who is perfect in knowledge?

17 You who swelter in your clothes
when the land lies hushed under the south wind,

18 can you join him in spreading out the skies,
hard as a mirror of cast bronze?

19 "Tell us what we should say to him;
we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness.

20 Should he be told that I want to speak?
Would any man ask to be swallowed up?

21 Now no one can look at the sun,
bright as it is in the skies
after the wind has swept them clean.

22 Out of the north he comes in golden splendor;
God comes in awesome majesty.

23 The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power;
in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.

24 Therefore, men revere him,
for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?"

Side Notes:

vs. 2 Nothing can compare to God. His power and presence are awesome, and when he speaks, we must listen. Too often we presume to speak for God (as did Job's friends), to put words in his mouth, to take him for granted, or to interpret his silence to mean that he is absent or unconcerned. But God cares. He is in control, and he will speak. Be ready to hear his message - in the Bible, in your life through the Holy Spirit, and through circumstances and relationships.

vs. 21-24 Elihu concluded his speech with the tremendous truth that faith in God is far more important than Job's desire for an explanation for his suffering. He came so close to helping Job but then went down the wrong path. Significantly, it is here that God himself breaks into the discussion to draw the right conclusions from this important truth (in chapter 38).

vs. 23 Elihu stressed God's sovereignty over all of nature as a reminder of his sovereignty over our lives. God is in control - he directs, preserves, and maintains his created order. Although we can't see it, God is divinely governing the moral and political affairs of people as well. By spending time observing the majestic and intricate parts of God's creation, we can be reminded of his power in every aspect of our lives.

I think Elihu hit the nail on the head for most of us. We need to stop and consider God's wonders. We lead such busy lives anymore and I don't think that we take the time to just stop and look at all that God has created and all that God is doing in our lives. I bet if we stopped more often we would notice even more things that God is doing for us. And like the side notes said...God is for us...even when he is quiet he is still there. He does talk to us and I'm even more convinced than ever that He talks to us through the Bible...which is why it is so important to be in the Word every single day...I need to be reminded of that 'cause I still struggle with that. But I think that it's so amazing that you can read a passage again and totally feel like you have never read that before...even though you know you have...that is God speaking to you...pointing out something new to you...and ususally I find that it is something that I'm dealing with in my life at that moment. God is so cool! Speaking of being in the Word...we need to pick out a new book...Job is running close to the end now...it's going to get exciting these next few chapters...God's going to speak! But after that it will be done...where do we want to go next? New Testament? Stay in the Old? Let me know your thoughts! Have a good Thursday everyone...see you on Friday!

How true is vs 5, that God does great things beyond our understanding... I don't have much on this chapter, the side notes and Ali said a lot...

As for the next book... How about something from the New Testament... with Christmas coming up and all I think it would be nice to focus on Jesus a little... Just my thought though, I'm open to anything.

A little update...Had a Dr's appt today and I am excited to say that things are going well, and I should be scheduling the appt for my cerclage to be taken out for about 3 weeks from now. Hard to believe that I've been on bed rest for 9 weeks, the end is in sight AND it seems like there is a good chance I could make it to at least 37 weeks! Thanks for all the prayers!
