Job 24

1 "Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment?
Why must those who know him look in vain for such days?

2 Men move boundary stones;
they pasture flocks they have stolen.

3 They drive away the orphan's donkey
and take the widow's ox in pledge.

4 They thrust the needy from the path
and force all the poor of the land into hiding.

5 Like wild donkeys in the desert,
the poor go about their labor of foraging food;
the wasteland provides food for their children.

6 They gather fodder in the fields
and glean in the vineyards of the wicked.

7 Lacking clothes, they spend the night naked;
they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.

8 They are drenched by mountain rains
and hug the rocks for lack of shelter.

9 The fatherless child is snatched from the breast;
the infant of the poor is seized for a debt.

10 Lacking clothes, they go about naked;
they carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.

11 They crush olives among the terraces;
they tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst.

12 The groans of the dying rise from the city,
and the souls of the wounded cry out for help.
But God charges no one with wrongdoing.

13 "There are those who rebel against the light,
who do not know its ways
or stay in its paths.

14 When daylight is gone, the murderer rises up
and kills the poor and needy;
in the night he steals forth like a thief.

15 The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk;
he thinks, 'No eye will see me,'
and he keeps his face concealed.

16 In the dark, men break into houses,
but by day they shut themselves in;
they want nothing to do with the light.

17 For all of them, deep darkness is their morning;
they make friends with the terrors of darkness.

18 "Yet they are foam on the surface of the water;
their portion of the land is cursed,
so that no one goes to the vineyards.

19 As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow,
so the grave snatches away those who have sinned.

20 The womb forgets them,
the worm feasts on them;
evil men are no longer remembered
but are broken like a tree.

21 They prey on the barren and childless woman,
and to the widow show no kindness.

22 But God drags away the mighty by his power;
though they become established, they have no assurance of life.

23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security,
but his eyes are on their ways.

24 For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;
they are brought low and gathered up like all others;
they are cut off like heads of grain.

25 "If this is not so, who can prove me false
and reduce my words to nothing?"

Side Notes:

Vs 18-21 Job suddenly seemed to be arguing on his friends side. For this reason, some commentators think one of Job’s friends said these words. But we shouldn’t expect Job to present a unified argument. He was confused. He was not arguing that, in every case, God rewards the wicked and punishes the righteous; he was simply asserting that in his case, a righteous man was suffering.

Wow...I think this was a pretty powerful passage. In the beginning I was right there questioning with Job...why can't we know the day of God's judgement..why can't we know when our suffering is going to end? I guess that it is a good thing that we don't know...I think that could cause more havoc in the long run but sometimes I do wonder...why God...why can't I know when the end of this will be. And then Job goes on to talk about what people do in the dark...being in the light and living in the light has always been part of my motto to live by...my mom always told me that good things never happened in the dark...and Jesus talks so much about the light and living in the Light and He is the Light...that's why I thought it would be a good name for a Bible Study blog...we are to be the light to our dark world...and let's face it...it's pretty dark and seems to be getting darker! So we need to be in the Light:
John 8:12
Psalm 18:28
1 John 1:7
Also in verse 12...I think we need to be careful of what we accuse God of. Just because this stuff happens doesn't mean He is happy about it...remember...everyone will have their Judgment Day!

Well I hope this week will be a good one for everyone! Anna...do you get to go home yet? So sorry you got the gestational diabetes...that is such a bummer on top of everything else...a few more weeks and you'll be done and craddling your babe and you'll forget all about these last nerve-wrecking weeks! Anyone else have any prayer requests?

Vs 23 & 24 is a reminder to me that even though it sometimes seems that the unrepentant go unpunished, God is watching and will take care of things in His own time. We shouldn't expect God to do things in the way we would. This can be hard especially when it comes to awful news we hear everyday like murders... or child abuse... But like Ali said, just because these things happen doesn't mean He's happy with them and everyone will get their Judgment Day.

Ultrasound at 10am tomorrow, I should have a pretty good idea if I can go home after that, but won't know for sure until I see my Doc on Wednesday. The GD is going alright... finding myself craving all the things I can't have though... like donuts and big bowls of pasta... LOL
