1 Samuel 5

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

1 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon's temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.

6 The LORD's hand was heavy upon the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation upon them and afflicted them with tumors. 7 When the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god." 8 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, "What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?"
They answered, "Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath." So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

9 But after they had moved it, the LORD's hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people." 11 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, "Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it will kill us and our people." For death had filled the city with panic; God's hand was very heavy upon it. 12 Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

Side Notes:

vs. 1 Dagon was the chief god of the Philistines, whom they believed sent rain and assured a bountiful harvest. But the Philistines, like most of their pagan neighbors, worshiped many gods. The more gods they could have on their side, the more secure they felt. That was why they wanted the ark, thinking that if it helped the Israelites,it could help them too. But when the people living nearby began to get sick and die, the Philistines realized that the ark was not a good omen. It was a source of greater power than they had ever seen - power they could not control.

vs 5-6 Although the Philistines had just witnessed a great victory by Israel's God over their god, Dagon, they didn't act upon that insight until they were afflicted with tumors (possibly bubonic plague). Similarly, today many people don't respond to Biblical truth until they experience pain. Are you willing to listen to God for truth's sake, or do you turn to him only when you are hurting?

vs. 8 The Philistines were governed by five rulers, or lords. Each lord lived in a different city - Gath, Ekron, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza. The ark was taken to three of these capital cities, and each time it brought great trouble and chaos to the citizens.

What a short chapter but what an impact it has. Okay...I have to admit when I first read it I thought their gods name was Dragon not Dagon...ha! But how cool is our God to show up like that and show them who is boss! Not this little (or big) staute of some god but a real God who has real powers over all the earth! And to have Dagon on his face before the ark was great! I don't know about you gals but I am really enjoying 1 Samuel...I think we are learning so much already...I loved Hannah and Samuel's story and now about how our God is fighting to show that he is the One True Living God...cool :) I also liked the side notes on vs. 6-7...it is so true...so many people turn to God in times of trouble...which is good...it's just too bad that they don't see a need to live for him everyday! We just need to make sure that we are there for those people when they are sick or in trouble and we need to make sure that we show them that God loves them and wants to be their God...in sickness and in health! And we need to make sure we show them His love for them :) by loving them :)

Well I hope you all had a great weekend...we did! One more week from tomorrow is all that we have to wait to make sure that Natalee is for sure ours...all the prayers would be great! Anna...Hunter is such a cutie! Hope all is well for him and you! Is he sleeping through the night yet? We are getting about 6 hour stretches but can't wait for at least 8! And...Britt...I don't think you've shared on here yet so I'm going to do it for you! Britt is expecting...September 1st so we need to keep that little one in our prayers as well! We want a happy and healthy baby to make it's entrance in September...and not too much before that! :)

Any other prayer requests?

I don't have much to add to what Ali said... definitely a powerful chapter!

Congrats to Britt! I will be praying!

Ali, I'm hoping this next week goes quickly and smoothly for your family. As for sleep, Natee is doing better then Hunter! I had two blissful nights in which he only got up once from bedtime (usually between 7 & 8) and 5 am. I think he actually made it to 6 am one of those days too. But we are now back to up 2 or 3 times a night. Last night I didn't even get more than a 3 hour stretch from him. I'd be okay with 5 or 6 hours again sometime soon :). I'm sure it will happen someday! :)
